The 2026 FIFA World Cup will deploy AI across officiating, tactics and security, but heat stress and logistics pose mounting risks to players and attendance across the US, Canada and Mexico.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off on June 11 as the largest tournament ever staged: 48 teams, 104 games across three countries, and an almost entirely AI-powered operation. But beneath the technological ambition lies a harder question: can the biggest sporting event in the world protect its players from the heat while delivering the revenue FIFA projects?
AI across the pitch and beyond
According to reporting from The Conversation, artificial intelligence will touch nearly every aspect of the tournament. On the pitch, coaches will use AI to analyse opposition tactics, forecast match outcomes, and monitor player workload and injury risk—work that once took days of manual analysis now takes hours.
The technology promises to speed up decision-making to an unprecedented degree. A key advantage is the speed at which these analyses can be undertaken.
Penalty shootouts will be influenced by AI, with teams synthesising historical data on goalkeepers and penalty takers to inform strategy. Match officials will rely on enhanced semi-automated offside technology paired with AI-enabled 3D avatars of every player, incorporating their faces, kit and hairstyles. These avatars will also be used to give fans more engaging replays of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions.
FIFA has also built an "Intelligence Command Centre" for crowd management and logistics. Referee view technology, using body cameras to capture footage from the official's perspective, will be stabilised and enhanced by AI to improve the viewing experience.
The heat problem
Yet a critical threat to player performance looms: extreme heat. According to new research analysed by climate and sports experts, the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup—held at the same venues and time of year as the 2026 tournament—revealed a troubling pattern.
Of 57 matches analysed, 54 per cent were played at a Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) of 28°C or higher, a measure that accounts for air temperature, humidity, solar radiation and wind. FIFA's own heat guidelines define a WBGT "near, at or above 32°C" as an extreme risk requiring cooling breaks or match postponement. Thirteen matches were played at 30°C or higher, and two at 32°C or above.
According to experts from the American College of Sports Medicine, all 31 of the high-temperature matches should have been cancelled. Instead, players were regularly exposed to extreme heat illness risk. Research presented by Canadian sports medicine researchers found that higher heat and humidity directly reduced players' running distances at all speeds—a finding that directly undermines tournament competitiveness and player safety.
Attendance and economic headwinds
The tournament's commercial ambitions face headwinds on the ground as well. The US hosted the World Cup in 1994 with just 24 teams and 52 matches; this year's expansion to 48 teams and 104 matches in the US alone represents a dramatic scale-up. The expansion has been deliberate: FIFA president Gianni Infantino has pursued growth to protect and extend football's commercial dominance, expand into non-traditional markets like the US, and strengthen FIFA's political base by granting smaller nations access.
But ticket prices are deterring attendance. Transportation costs have also ballooned: the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is charging $80 for a ride to Gillette Stadium in Boston that normally costs $20; New Jersey Transit initially set train fares from New York to MetLife Stadium at $150 before reducing them to $105 after public backlash.
According to a survey from the American Hotel and Lodgings Association, hotel bookings are softer than expected in all 11 US host cities. Miami is in the best position, with only 45% of hotel owners projecting a shortfall. Kansas City is worst hit, with 85–90% of hotel owners reporting bookings below expectations. Tourism analysts attribute the decline to inflation, high fuel prices, geopolitical uncertainty, and concerns about US immigration policies.
A mixed picture for African football
The expansion has opened new doors for African teams. A record 10 African nations qualified for 2026—double the five that appeared in 2018 and 2022. The 48-team format has resolved what researchers call a "geopolitical bottleneck" in the qualification process, allowing teams like South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Cape Verde to compete alongside long-standing contenders like Morocco, Egypt and Senegal.
According to sports scholars, this expansion reflects the growing tactical maturity of African football and a shift in how the sport is governed globally. Yet the heat stress findings carry particular implications for teams travelling from cooler climates.
What comes next
FIFA's approach to balancing innovation and player welfare remains unresolved. The Intelligence Command Centre and AI systems are designed to optimise the tournament experience, but the heat research suggests that no amount of tactical AI or enhanced officiating can override the physical limits imposed by climate. Whether FIFA will strengthen heat protocols before June 11—or risk another tournament where players are regularly exposed to conditions experts say should have halted play—will shape the legacy of the 2026 World Cup as much as any penalty shootout decided by machine learning.
