Alberta teachers ban AI companions designed to simulate care in classrooms

Alberta's teachers union has rejected anthropomorphic AI systems that simulate friendship or counselling in schools, drawing a line between AI literacy and simulated emotional relationships.

The Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) has passed a resolution opposing the deployment of AI systems designed to simulate care, friendship or intimate relationships in K–12 learning environments — a move that highlights growing concerns about how schools should handle emotionally-responsive machines.

At its 2026 annual representative assembly, the ATA passed a resolution calling for "anthropomorphic artificial intelligence tools, including AI companions and other AI systems designed specifically to simulate friendship, counselling or intimate relationships, not be deployed or introduced into any Alberta K–12 learning environments or support settings."

The timing is striking. Almost simultaneously, Alberta's government announced a $2.7-million, three-year partnership with the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) to develop AI learning kits for classrooms, aimed at helping teachers introduce AI concepts across subjects through digital resources, coaching and curriculum connections. On the surface, the two developments appear contradictory — one banning specific AI tools while the other promotes AI literacy. In practice, they reflect different boundaries: teachers are not rejecting AI itself, but a particular kind of AI presence in children's lives.

The distinction between literacy and simulated care

The ATA resolution is significant because it names a distinction that many education systems are still beginning to grapple with. Schools serve functions beyond information delivery. They are places where children develop judgment, trust, identity, relationships and a sense of belonging — roles that make the arrival of anthropomorphic AI a different matter from earlier classroom technologies.

Anthropomorphic AI refers to systems designed to appear human-like. In educational settings, this may include AI companions, chatbot friends, counselling-like systems or tutor bots that present themselves as warm, caring, responsive and emotionally available.

The concern extends beyond obvious cases. An AI companion explicitly marketed as a friend is one problem. But a tutor bot can simulate care without claiming friendship. Through tone, memory, praise and emotional language — saying "I'm proud of you," "I'm here for you," or "you can always talk to me" — it can create the feeling of a stable relationship while carrying no actual responsibility for the child. It can respond instantly and endlessly, creating emotional availability that no human teacher can match.

Why the boundary matters for learning

Children do not learn from neutral information sources alone. According to the reporting, they learn in relationships, through trust, encouragement, challenge, correction and care. When a machine imitates these relational cues, it can blur the boundary between educational support and emotional attachment — a distinction the ATA resolution seeks to preserve.

The resolution reflects a judgment that simulated care, however effective it might appear in the short term, risks undermining the relational foundations on which genuine learning and development depend. It does not reject AI as a teaching tool, but it does establish that certain kinds of AI presence — those designed to feel like human relationships — should not be introduced into spaces where children are developing their capacity to trust, judge and belong.
