Telstra outage cripples Australian trains, payments, and services nationwide

The disruption extended far beyond mobile phones. EFTPOS payment services, taxi payment systems, the electric vehicle charging platform Chargefox, and public transport ticketing in Canberra all went offline. Victoria's regional V/Line suspended all services with no estimated time for resumption and limited coach replacements available. Train services in New South Wales were also impacted. Why Telstra's network collapse shut down trains

The connection between a mobile network and rail operations is not immediately obvious, but it is fundamental to modern train safety and operations.

Trains communicate with control centres through roof-mounted antennae that operate on frequency channels shared with mobile networks. These channels transmit voice and data in real time — sending location information, speed, arrival times, and other critical operational data back to the control centre. This continuous connection ensures safe coordination across the rail network.

When the Telstra network went down, trains lost the ability to send or receive this traffic-related information. That includes time-critical alerts about delays, cancellations, and route changes, as well as diagnostic data on engine and braking performance.

While trains can technically operate without mobile connectivity — they did so for decades before mobile networks existed — running trains safely without real-time communication to control centres is no longer considered secure practice.

Infrastructure reliance on a single provider

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), which manages more than 9,600 kilometres of rail tracks across New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia, upgraded its train-to-network communications to 4G on the Telstra network in 2024. VicTrack, which operates V/Line, also uses the Telstra network and partners with ARTC on transport operations.

That concentration of dependency meant that any disruption to Telstra's services would immediately cascade across rail networks that had migrated their critical control systems to the company's infrastructure.

What happens next

As of Wednesday mid-morning, Telstra had not provided an estimated time for service restoration. Train operators were offering limited coach replacements while investigating the root cause of the outage and working to restore network connectivity.
