A single sports injury—a twisted ankle, a strained calf, a sore knee—can feel like an isolated setback. But for many people, the real trouble emerges weeks or months later, when a second injury strikes in a different place. The compensation cycle
When you hurt yourself, your body responds by changing the way it moves. This is a protective reflex: if one area hurts or feels weak, the body shifts the workload elsewhere. In the short term, this helps. You can still walk, climb stairs, and manage everyday tasks despite the pain.
But during sport and exercise—where the body must run, jump, turn, and absorb sudden forces—those small compensatory changes accumulate. A person recovering from an ankle sprain, for example, might limp slightly, shorten their stride, or put more weight on the uninjured leg. The pain-recovery gap

Sports involving repeated impact or frequent direction changes amplify the risk further. Running, football, and basketball are obvious examples: small flaws in movement can be repeated hundreds of times in a single training session, compounding their effect.
Age also matters. As people get older, muscles, tendons, and ligaments become stiffer and slower to adapt to load. Recovery itself takes longer. This does not mean older athletes should avoid exercise, but rather that recovery must be managed more carefully.
The path forward
